Picking the Perfect Color Palette For Your Wedding

Ian RamirezWedding Planning, Wedding Tips

Would you agree that selecting a color palette for your wedding can be easier said than done? After all, there are quite a few different factors you’ll consider in the selection process and it can be difficult to avoid overthinking the decision. However, since it’s a choice that’ll impact various other items like decor, dresses, tuxedos and flowers, it’s important to take your time and land on a palette that you both truly love!

For those familiar with our wedding-themed blog, you know “wedding planning” is something we truly have a passion for. Whether that be in regards to finding the perfect wedding photographer to capture your big day, figuring out ways to best utilize technology in the planning process or anything else, a solid portion of our prior blog posts are centered around the idea of bringing your dream wedding to life in a stress-free manner! As referenced in the opening paragraph, this week’s blog will largely be focused on finalizing your wedding color palette. It is a perfect example of a decision that will present couples with more than enough possibilities, but at the same time, it’s important to avoid getting overwhelmed with the plethora of options. We’ll look to provide you with a few tips to keep in mind, as well as variables that you may want to consider. With that all being said, let’s talk wedding color palettes!

How many colors should you use?

As you begin your journey in picking the perfect color combination for your big day, many couples wonder how many different colors should be included in the palette. While there’s no strict guidelines, going with around 3-4 colors should usually be sufficient (3 tends to be the most popular number). The reason why we suggest this ballpark figure is: Going with too many colors can make everything seem a little unorganized and it will be difficult to tie everything together. On the other hand, only going with 1 or 2 colors will make it tough to truly add that “WOW” factor. Not to mention, don’t forget to also incorporate neutral colors to help balance everything out.

Go Seasonal

With that opening FAQ taken care of, it’s now time to consider a few of the options you have when deciding on your color palette. Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular strategies involves playing into the individual season in which you’ll tie the knot. Think of colors that will tie into the in-season floral arrangements. Here are a few seasonal possibilities:

Fall – Since we’re about a month away from fall, that is a great place to start. Thanks to the beautiful backdrops and ideal weather, fall weddings are always extremely popular. For colors, you have a few different routes to choose from. Fall is pumpkin spice latte season, right? Well…why not go with a dark orange then? It can be a terrific accent color that truly pops. Dark blues and dark reds also tend to be popular as both moody and bold colors.

Summer – For a summer wedding celebration, a popular color palette tends to be anything vibrant. With all of the bright colors scattered throughout, we always love how summer wedding photo albums turn out! Without a doubt, any shade of pink can act as a true statement color and it’s no surprise why many summer wedding couples opt to include it in their palette.

Winter – Planning a winter wedding? If so, there are few different ways you can go with a seasonal color palette. Emerald/forest greens are always a hit. Likewise, as we mentioned above with fall weddings, dark reds also seem to be a popular accent choice for couples going for more of the moody color palette.

Spring – Last, but certainly not least, we have the spring season! It goes without saying that spring is always a joyous time and as such, we tend to see a return of the bright colors for spring weddings. This is a perfect time to design a color palette around pinks, light greens, lilac or even a turquoise.

Lean On Your Industry Professionals

People that work in the wedding industry have seen countless wedding celebrations. No matter what season that may be, they can more than likely provide some very helpful advice in several aspects of the wedding planning process. So, with that in mind, many wedding vendors can be the perfect resource when you’re struggling for ideas. Take the color palettes, for example. Struggling to decide which colors will look best for a summer wedding in Texas? Ask your florist which flowers are most popular in the summertime. Ask your photographer what colors always look flawless in summer wedding photos. Ask your venue coordinator what the summer wedding color trends have been the past few years. Long story short, you have plenty of knowledgeable resources at your disposal that can likely give you some quick and easy advice.

Consider the Venue

When crafting various elements of your wedding day, there are going to be plenty of things that you’ll have control over. In other words, think of elements like centerpieces, table layouts, lanterns, closing exits and so on. When it comes down to it, there really is plenty of decor included when planning a wedding. If you host your wedding at Madera and are looking for a little extra pizzazz, make sure to inquire about Madera Luxe for added enhancements.

However, even when booking an all-inclusive wedding package, you aren’t necessarily going to be able to alter every single detail. There are going to be a handful of fixed objects that are simply part of the venue itself, which you won’t be able to hide or change their appearance. As such, it never hurts to consider the actual wedding venue you’ve signed with as you’re evaluating potential color schemes. Think of how the backdrop for the ceremony might mesh with the colors you’re considering. Likewise, just as we mentioned above with utilizing the advice of your wedding vendors, take a look through your wedding venue’s social media pages. Chances are most of the ceremony/reception backdrops will be pretty similar, so this is a terrific way to see real world examples of how different colors match up. To sum it up, you don’t have to base your wedding colors solely on the wedding venue, but it is a factor worth considering!
