So, What Is Wedding Insurance?

Just like other insurance types, wedding insurance protects your investment. It’s no secret, weddings can cost a pretty penny. How horrified would you be if all that money spent was forfeited? Essentially, wedding insurance protects a couple’s investment from circumstances that are out of their control. Tornado? Hurricane? Pandemic? Yep, wedding insurance can protect you from any “acts of god” so to speak.

Wedding insurance can also protect you from smaller, yet still expensive, situations. For example, what if your DJ doesn’t show up and you have to hire one the morning of the wedding? (Side note, this is one of the main reasons you should consider hiring from your venue’s preferred vendors list). You could end up easily paying over double the original price! As another example, what if your custom made couture veil gets lost in the mail and you have to purchase another one? Maybe your florist goes out of business, you lose that deposit and have to find another one? These are all examples of financial losses that wedding insurance can protect you from.

Should I Really Buy Wedding Insurance?

Yep. Totally. From weather to problems with the site, to vendors, sickness, or injuries, there are tons of reasons why you should consider purchasing wedding insurance. Here are a few scenarios that might explain it best:

  • Inclement Weather – They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, but a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, is another story! Let’s say there’s a massive storm before the wedding and your guests are unable to make it to the venue. Maybe the airports are closed and the water is too deep for cars to drive in. Wedding insurance can allow the couple to reschedule their wedding day. With the right policy, couples can recover every penny spent and postpone their celebration. Natural disasters happen, and it’s a good idea to be prepared!
  • In Sickness & In Heath – The groom gets terribly ill a day before the event and cannot attend his own wedding (knock on wood). Without wedding insurance, you’re likely forfeiting all the money spent. From invitations to the cake, musicians, the flowers and more, you are still responsible to pay all your vendors.
  • Weird Circumstances – Have you seen the movie “Meet The Fockers”? Remember when the cat claws the wedding gown? Yep, insurance can cover that too.

How Much Does Wedding Insurance Cost?

We’re not an insurance agent, but we can provide you with some ballpark information. A wedding insurance policy can cost anywhere from $150 – $1,000, depending on the amount of coverage you want. Similarly to auto or home insurance, the more expensive your wedding is the higher the insurance policy will be. This can cover the photos, video, attire, rings, deposits, gifts, and more! A $1,000,000 general liability insurance policy for accidents can cost as little as just $185. Simply put, wedding insurance really is a small price to pay for the large piece of mind it provides!

Do I Really Need Wedding Insurance?

We’re not saying there’s a right or wrong answer here, but you should definitely consider getting wedding insurance. With that said, contact your vendors and ask them for copies of their insurance policies. Likely your venue, florist, photographer, videographer and other vendors will have their own insurance. You can take this information to your insurance agent to prevent you from paying for overlapping coverage.

What Does Wedding Insurance NOT Cover?

Again, every policy is different, but some common things that are not covered include the wedding rings and a change of heart. You’ll need to purchase a different kind of insurance policy for your engagement ring and wedding bands. As far as a change of heart, we pray that this isn’t the case for you! However, understandably things happen. We recommend investing in premarital counseling before putting down deposits for your big day. This will help you communicate and make sure your values are in sync before jumping into wedding planning.

Additional Coverage Options

As previously mentioned, you’ll want to get a separate insurance policy for your rings. In addition, ask your insurance representative about photography, gifts, attire, personal liability, medical coverage, and even protection for your honeymoon. Remember, not all insurance policies are created equal. Don’t just purchase the cheaper coverage and assume that it will encompass all types of protection.

When Should I Buy Wedding Insurance?

In short, the sooner the better! Most insurance companies have limitations on how far in advance you can purchase insurance. Once you start actually putting down deposits, you should purchase coverage.
